Library

Welcome to the Olander School Library (or, as it is more formally known, the Instructional Media Center)!   Parents and students are welcome to drop by anytime and read a book from our wonderful collection!  Olander Library is one of the few elementary school libraries that still read aloud to each grade level, K-6, every week.  During each weekly library visit, children hear a story and have time to check out library books.

Librarian - Debbie Hebbeln (debheb@psd.k12.co.us)

Borrowing Books

Books are checked out for a one-week period.  Books can be renewed as needed as long as there are no requests for the books.  Students must have the book with them in order to renew it.  Some very popular books will have limits on the number of times it can be renewed.  Parents are welcome to check out books, too!  Stop in the library and Mrs. Hebbeln can set up an account for you.

Library  Book Limits

Kindergarten:  One book may be checked out for one week.
Grade 1:  One book may be checked out for one week, later increasing to two books.
Grades 2-6:  Three books may be checked out for one week.  Upper grades may check out more books for projects and reports.

Book Care and Responsiblity

Your child becomes responsible for a book as soon as they check it out until it is checked back in at the library.  Students are reminded about proper care of books, including:

  • Keep books away from pets and small children.
  • Damage is often caused by items leaking in backpacks - placing books in ziploc bags and storing water bottles in separate bags or pockets will help prevent this.
  • Should a book get damaged while in your care, please do not try to repair it at home.  We have special materials in the library to fix books.
  • Keep drinks and food away from library books.

Damaged, Lost and Overdue Books

  • Accidents do happen despite our best efforts.  Should a book fall apart or become damaged while in your care, please do not try to repair it at home.  Bring it (and all of its parts) to the librarian for repair.  If the damage is normal wear, there is no charge.  If the damage is accidental or deliberate, you will be responsible for paying the replacement cost of the item.
  • Lost books must also be paid for at replacement cost.  If a lost book is later found and returned, the money will be returned to the student or parent.
  • There are no fines charged for overdue books.  However, students cannot check out any additional books until overdue items are returned.
