Blevins 2010-2011 Pre-Advanced Placement Program Information

In an effort to support the PSD goal of preparing all students to be post-secondary ready, Blevins has made some changes in our PreAdvanced Placement  (PreAP) program’s participation process.

First of all, some information about PreAP classes. As stated on the College Board website,“Conceptually, PreAP is based on the following two important premises. The first is the expectation that all students can perform at rigorous academic levels. . . The second important premise of PreAP is the belief that we can prepare every student for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible. Addressed effectively, the middle and high school years can provide a powerful opportunity to help all students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning.”

With this in mind, beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, Blevins 7th and 8th grade students and families will be able to self-select into the PreAP program without the application and writing sample process. They simply need to choose the PreAP classes on the student’s registration form, review the student expectations for PreAP classes, and sign a Commitment Statement on the back of the registration form. At this point, the students will continue to register for all three PreAP classes: English, Science, and Social Studies and cannot opt for only one or two. The PreAP student is also expected to remain in the program for the entire school year. As in the past, Math is considered separate from the PreAP program so students follow the appropriate district math curriculum pathway.

Although any student may choose to participate in the PreAP program, we suggest parents and students consider the following for making the decision. Students who are successful in the PreAP program typically:

  • Earn A’s and B’s consistently in their core academic classes
  • Consistently score Proficient or Advanced on CSAP
  • Consistently score High or High-Average on the MAPS tests
  • Have an independent work ethic, well-developed study habits, strong citizenship and attendance, and strong parental guidance and support
  • Demonstrate more complex and mature composition skills and higher level thinking skills
  • Have the ability to manage independent reading and outlining, internet research, and an independent science fair project

If you have questions, contact Diane Schultz at 488-4009 or dschultz@psdschools.org for further information.

FYI:  On the back of the class registration form, students selecting PreAP classes will be required to sign the following statement along with a parent.

I have read the guidelines and agree to fulfill the expectations for inclusion in PreAdvanced Placement classes at Blevins. I understand this is a full year commitment to all three PreAP classes.
