View Dr. Smyser's graphic which is intended to connect the dots of the work in PSD: PSD’s vision in motion is a roadmap for all students to succeed. This journey begins when children start their formal education in early childhood and ends when students graduate from one of our high schools. And here, the work of the district creates a multi-layered wheel that travels along this road, advancing students toward our expected outcome: being ready to succeed in our changing world.
The hub of the district’swork is the education of our students. Surrounding that is PSD’s new instructional framework, consisting of teachers and principals implementing the 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning (or the 5Ds as they are known): classroom culture and environment, assessment for student learning, purpose, curriculum & pedagogy and student engagement.
As of today, half of PSD’s schools have participated in training on this framework and the remainder of our schools will go through this grounding work throughout the year. These efforts are enhanced through collaboration and professional communication among staff members, schools and the district as a whole.
Surrounding these are efforts related to Educator Effectiveness. These are the tools by which the district will address the work of teachers, principals and special service providers. What’s really exciting about this layer of the wheel is that it is grounded in the 5 Ds as well.
Moving outward, are the essential supports that allow the instructional framework and evaluation process to work. These are the programs and district efforts that make up the spokes in the wheel.
Giving strength and stability to the wheel are the character attributes of PSD. These include the Operating Principles which help create a positive culture and climate.
And finally, here, is the the wheel’s tread – the proverbial where the rubber meets the road. It’s PSD’s high quality staff that keep the wheel turning down its path toward success.
Now, let’s connect the remaining dots. All this work is enhanced through PSD’s culture of health and wellness. The infusion of health and wellness supports PSD’s vision in motion from early childhood through graduation.
Along the way, PSD has also identified four benchmarks that evaluate the district’s progress along the roadway: third grade reading proficiency, annual academic growth, successful transitions and post secondary readiness.
